Free Solaris?
Whoever said that there’s no such thing as free lunch should re-consider that statement!!
Sun Microsystems is now offering Solaris 10, their popular UNIX OS, touted as the best ever, for FREE!! Yes, you can either get the DVD images(there are 5 parts of 400+ MB each which will need to be concatenated upon download into 1 ISO file, instructions are given) or the 5 CD images from here!! Well, I don’t know for how long have they been providing it for free but I discovered that just a few minutes ago & am already downloading my DVD images!! You’ll have to be a registered member to download(registration is free), so if you don’t have an account, create one or use bugmenot.com!!
Now I can see what Solaris is all about, have heard so much about it but never really tried it, now I will!!
But before downloading, be sure to read the System Requirements, as Solaris won’t run on a lower spec machine!!

If they give the CDs or DVDs for free (like Ubuntu) then I will surely give Solaris my vote.
They are not shipping you CDs or DVDs for free like Ubuntu. You are to download the ISO images!!!
Its alright there’s a free lunch but don’t expect a free dinner as well!!
Yeah, its good. But then, Sun did not get the wisdom until IBM started aggressive compaign to port applications from Solaris to Linux (I guess it must be Red Hat, IBM’s baby?).
So, Sun wants people to hug free solaris the same way ppl have done with linx. Its battle of *nices. Interesting though.
And well, its free as in free speech - not as in free beer..
whatever you say, shipping free CDs & DVDs to everyone is not a good idea from a corporate’s point of view, there are a lot of nutters who ask for multiple CDs or DVDs again & again!! And just Ubuntu has this facility of shipping free CDs as its being sponsored by a company!! No other Linux distro has this facility!! Did we hear Debian is being shipped free?
Still its considered the best Linux distro around!! So if you are gonna judge a software or tool on the basis if its free or not & if it ships free or not, then I’m gonna say that you don’t have much sense of judgement!! And I don’t mean to be rude!!
Solaris is considered the best UNIX around, whether its free or not, that doesn’t affect its quality!! A lot of corporates have their servers running on Solaris, I’ve heard its really excellent!! So if its offered for free, then that doesn’t mean that you should take the arm & now try to grab the neck by asking for free CDs/DVDs shipped to you!! :eyebrow:
Also, don’t post comments in wrong posts like that, Spam Karma doesn’t like it & it’ll blacklist you!! This comment of yours was sent into moderation just for that reason & I had to pull it out!!
I dont remember talking about free CD, dude. And I do have working experience of 6 years on Solaris and AIX and even Sco(!), so I know its good. (I never said its not good) I am just mentioning something about why it was made free! My bad it did not go across.
and thanks a bunch for pulling it out. I was dying of anxiety!
Uh oh, sorry about that!!
I was half-awake when I made that comment, it was not you but another guy who said about trying Solaris only if they give free CDs or DVDs like Ubuntu.
I do not have broadband connection. so i cannot download those huge ISOs. Can anybody give me same on CDs? And I dont mind paying that guy!
Sun on Open Source Road!!
Sun Microsystems, of Java fame, is on the road to Open Source softwares!! Earlier it open sourced its operating system Solaris, it has already made the Java Studio Creator available for free, and now it’ll be offering Java Enterprise System serv…
hi guys,
i think ubuntu is doing great. u know, linux users are increasing in students. if they have to get cds, they cant pay, but have to copy or beg to some shoppers. it will be fine if the sun is also giving out some cds or dvds.
Sagar, if you think that an OS can become popular only if it ships free DVDs/CDs, then you don’t know what you are talking about. Ubuntu is no where near the popularity of Fedora, Debian, Slackware, FreeBSD etc. and none of them offers free CD/DVD shipping!! And Debian is a mammoth in size yet its popular, those who want to use something, they’ll get it one way or other. Besides, increasing penetration of broadband almost negates the purpose of CD/DVD shipping as people are able to download large files.
And for your information, Ubuntu people don’t ship free CDs/DVDs. Its just that they got a sponsor who pays for all the shipping costs etc. So if any other OS camp gets such a sponsor, they’ll start shipping free CDs/DVDs as well!!
And still on another note, the purpose of Ubuntu shipping CDs/DVDs is to spread its use. It doesn’t mean that you use it only when you order it. If you for example get 10 DVDs, & if you or a friend happens to have a DVD-RW, then you should copy the DVDs to blank ones & distribute them after you have distributed the ones you got from Ubuntu. That’s the whole purpose behind it, the spirit of sharing. But not many people do that, they don’t even distribute the DVDs that they got from Ubuntu. Asking for a DVD from a friend is not begging & copying those DVDs etc. isn’t bad!!
