Mozilla Goes Mobile

Mozilla finally made it’s Minimo (Mini Mozilla) Browser version 0.007 for Windows CE available to the public as a ‘preview’ on 26th July, 2005. This browser is based on the Firefox browser’s code. The new feature in this public release was the addition of tabbed browsing. Like Firefox, it allows for extensions and plugins, and is uses the XUL interface. The only problem is the the majority of mobile browser users don’t use Windows CE.
However, the Windows CE platform has been used by many developers to enter the mobile software segment. Mozilla should be no different. Considering that Firefox recently crossed the 75 million download mark, the developers at mozilla would certainly be interested in moving on to better known mobile platforms such as the Symbian OS and Windows Mobile. Firefox’s platform compatibility should make that easily possible, not to mention the fact that we just love to hype open source software. However, Mozilla has not announced an official timetable/roadmap for the Minimo Project yet.
Competition for Opera on the Symbian Platform and IE on Windows Mobile would be very welcome, and considering that these future browsers will bear the Firefox tag, they will be a “must try once” for many. I’d say - Give Me More !! ![]()
