$100 Laptop from MIT Labs !
The much talked about project is closer to becoming reality as a prototype is being prepared for a launch in december this year, with mass production expected to begin towards the end of next year. Priced at a mere $100, the specifications are hard to believe, and they say it’s meant for kids !

- Processor - 500 MHz (The RAM, Processor and Motherboard will probably be integrated)
- Storage - 1 GB Flash Drive (No hard drive, hence no moving parts)
- Display - Dual LCD Colour (expected price is $35), switches to B/W for outdoor reading.
- Integrated WiFi (a WiFi adapter costs around $100 today ! )
- Integrated Cell Phone and 1 Megapixel Camera !
- Operating System - Undecided Linux Variant
- Power Source - AC Cord that doubles as carrying strap and a hand-crank. One minute of cranking gives enough power for 10 minutes of operating
All that for $100 ! I want one, now ! The computer, however, is not intended to be used for commercial purposes, but instead as an educational tool. But seeing those specifications, and that price, it’s hard to see the laptop not finding commercial applications, especially in developing countries like India. Forget the kids, their parents would want it first !
The design is like that of a kids’ toy to ward off any potential adult buyers, but looking at it, I’d say it needed more yellow, blue and green to really ward them off. Whatever the case, if they do manage to bring it out with the above specifications at that price, it’s one of the decade’s best buys !
