Review : Meebo
I described Meebo a couple of weeks ago. To freshen up your memories, let me remind you that Meebo is an AJAX based online IM (Instant Messenger) client, supporting the AIM, Yahoo, MSN, ICQ, and now Google Talk/Jabber networks.
Since its launch in September, Meebo has come a long way and is currently in it’s seventh edition. Meebo is a web application that makes use of GAIM internally to provide access to multiple IM networks.
Features and New Additions:
- Familiar and easy to use interface with a Yahoo-esque look
- It takes just a few seconds to login and get started
- It’s free to use, and has no ads (so far)
- Support for GTalk, Yahoo, MSN, ICQ, and AIM
- Support for Offline Messages in Yahoo
- Add or remove buddies from within Meebo
- Set your status as away or something else
- Finally, some personality with smilies
- 1024 bit password encryption and Verisign security certificate.
- Most of the problems with AIM and MSN have bee sorted out
Despite being an excellent tool I’d like to see a few features added to Meebo, so my wish list is:
- Support for Opera, although I think Opera will have to pick up their compliance levels a bit too.
- A message notification beep or sound similar to Yahoo messenger.
One cool way people are running meebo is as an active desktop (both Windows and Mac). Check it out!
