300GB Optical Disk!!
Yes, as per this news article on vnunet.com, a computer disk the size of DVD but having the capacity to hold about 60 times more data than a conventional DVD-RW, being developed by InPhase Technologies, will be available in market by 2006.
The discs having a diameter of 13cm and & thickness just a shade more than normal DVDs, use Tapestry holographic memory technology to store data by interference of light, which will allow them to store about 300GB of data at the speeds of 160Mbps, nearly 10 times faster than the DVD read/write speeds.
The conventional DVDs record data by measuring microscopic ridges on the surface of a spinning disc & the newer technologies like Blu-Ray & HD-DVD also use the same technique but use a shorter wavelength to stuff up more data.
InPhase Technologies has grouped up with Hitachi & Maxell who will market and sell these discs.
If these discs do come out in 2006 & and doesn’t cost a bomb for the media & the reader/writer devices, then I think that they can give both Blu-Ray & HD-DVD a run for their money since they both are expected to arrive in the markets in 2006 as well.
