Free Audiobooks!!
While browsing around internet in the wee hours of morning today(around about 3am), I came across LibriVox. Its a project similar to Gutenberg, as Gutenberg makes available public domain literature to you in digital text format, LibriVox strives to provide the same in digital audio format(or as audiobooks you can say), for free!!
Audiobooks became popular with Apple’s iPod as people started creating/obtaining them to listen to them on their favourite MP3 player. The trend caught on with Podcasts. But that doesn’t mean that you’ve to have an iPod or any other MP3 player to listen to them, you can listen to them on your PC or Mac, all you need is a software that can play MP3 audio(common file format for audiobooks/podcasts) or the file format of the audiobook/podcast and a set of speakers/headphones.
Though the catalogue of LibriVox is not that extensive, its going strong, with quite a number of finished works available for download as Low Quality MP3(64kbps bitrate), High Quality MP3(128kbps bitrate) and High Quality Ogg Vorbis(OggVorbis is an open format that doesn’t have any licensing restrictions like the MP3 format) audio. And many titles are in progress which will be available for download soon.
If you want, you can contribute to this project by lending your voice and reading(& recording) some books. All you’ll need is a clear voice & pronunciation of English, a microphone & a computer. You can use any of the available free softwares for editing your recorded work. For more information, look here on how to volunteer for LibriVox.
