A Terabyte of Bandwidth!!

Are we seeing a surge in web hosting deals or is it just some hoax or marketing gimmick? Surfing around, I came across DreamHost’s website & was quite shocked to see that they’ve multiplied the storage & bandwidth limit on all their plans many times over!! Their $9.95 per month “Crazy Domain Insane” plan which offered 4000MB is now offering 20GB and the bandwidth had been increased from 160GB/month to 1TB(terabyte)/month!! Is that real? Yep, sure it is, ideally thats 1024GB, but web hosts consider 1000GB to be equal to 1TB, but even at 1000GB its quite good a plan for a $9.95/month account!! And not to mention, they increase your storage limit by 160MB per week & bandwidth by 8GB per week. Higher plans have higher limits & higher increments!!

And if you are smart, you’d want to pay just $29.40 for whole year instead of $119.40!! :shh:

So, as I think about it, are we gonna see other hosts who’ll also up the limits of storage and bandwidths at the current rates are are they gonna just sulk & continue to suck customers dry?

This sounds good, if I can negotiate a deal to sell off a portion to somebody else at a decent price, then I may be getting this within a week.

I wouldn’t advise you to sell off a portion to someone, since its not a reseller account. Its one domain hosted where you can have unlimited add-on domains, so providing safe access via FTP to individual add-on domains, I don’t think they have that, since they don’t allow you to resell!! :)

Besides, that coupon is still valid(I tested it) which gives you $90 off on 1 year’s hosting, making the L1 plan $29.40 for the year, that’s about the same amount one pays for 25MB-100MB(& a handful MB of monthly bandwidth) with an Indian host here!! ;)

I’m talking about selling as in private negotiation with people I trust. They’re quite content with small space and bandwidth as they are starting off on the web.

well, I know what you mean, but when they say that you can host multiple domains on an account, it doesn’t mean that they are offering a reseller account to you where each domain hosted can have seperate account, settings etc. The thing to understand is that they host your main domain & you can host other domains under that main domain as addon domains, which will share the root of the main domain. You won’t be able to provide people you host with their own Control Panel(as you’ll get only one) and its quite possible that the FTP accounts you provide them will be able to access your main domain & other addon domains’ files as well.

So if only you plan to manage all the domains you host & not provide your partners with any control panel or FTP access(which I think they’ll demand sooner or later), then its ok otherwise not.

Besides, I’m 99% sure that its against DreamHost’s policy, you can’t sell off chunks of your space as you can in a reseller account. They’ll suspend your account in a blink of an eye if they get the wind of it, so either risk it or ask them about it.

Also, I’ve had some discussion with people who’ve had experience with DreamHost and they say that though its ok, but a downside is that they have PHP running as CGI, so 3-4 scripts running side by side and you start having problems as CGI opens a new process for every request, be it from the same user. Secondly, if you have any script running that requires some more than average processing(sometimes happens when you get heavy traffic), chances are your script will be killed by DreamHost & you’ll be served a warning, because its clear that they are overselling too much(how else are you supposed to get 20GB for $9.95/month) and that means more users on a server resulting in an increased load!!

I for one, wouldn’t want to host my process intensive applications there, not even a WordPress blog that might get quite a bit of traffic!! ;)

Funny you say that, Matt Mullenweg constantly praised dreamhost while he was hosted there.

Dreamhost told me I can throttle bandwidth for every domain, which is good enough for me.

and sshhh. keep it quiet ;-) Dreamhost dont have to know about my private negotiations, and maybe I’ll end up with several sites to host myself, in which case I dont have to buy. I think I’ll decide it some time this week.

well, I don’t remember Matt having a shared hosting account there!! maybe he had a dedicated server from them which is different since you can put all the load on it as you want as you are responsible for it!! ;)

surething, DreamHost won’t hear about it from me!! :shh:

If I remeber correctly, he mentioned the bandwidth that comes along (came along) with the shared plan, so I’m quite sure it was one, but I’m no intent on starting a fight here, so let’s leave it at that…

Cool, just watch out for any CPU intensive applications, they are known to pull the plug faster than any other host!!

I ike what I see of dreamhost. Had my account activated this morning, so I set up IndiaTravelTalk.com with the free domain (call it funny but it’s a personal interest).

More details about the site here.
